Safety and Environment are top priorities for us. As an SME we're not required to report our carbon emissions, but we strive to go above and beyond, so we’ve been voluntarily tracking our carbon footprint since 2023. As a key partner to the waste and recycling sector we have a responsibility to ensure our impact on the environment is as low as possible.

Our goal is to align our activities to the key targets of the Paris Climate Agreement to limit global warming to well below 2°C and to achieve carbon neutral (Net Zero) position by 2050.

27% reduction in our carbon emissions

We used the Greenhouse Gas Protocol to perform the assessment as it’s the most widely adopted standard. After our first full year review [2023], we learnt that travel (including leased assets, business travel, and employee commuting) made up 85% of total emissions. So, we tackled that first.

What did we do?

We switched our engineers from pick-up trucks to fuel efficient Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles. This resulted in a massive 30 tCO2e reduction in leased asset emissions.

We’ve given all our office staff introductory training on Sustainability, Environment, and Reporting to improve their understanding of the assessment and what is expected of our customers, as well as what we can do to reduce our carbon footprint.

50% over 5 years

But we don’t want to stop there.

We’re setting our sights on a 50% reduction over 5 years — that’s another 20 tonnes to cut.

To do this we’ll be focusing on a few areas:

  • Route optimisation and continuation of right first time approach
  • Fleet upgrades to full electric
  • Product design optimisation for sustainability and circularity.

It’s always Safety First

Whilst we’re exploring areas of focus for improving the sustainability of the design of products and to reduce the carbon emissions associated with our operations, it must be stressed that we still have a safety-first approach.

Therefore, sustainability improvements can, and will only, be made where they do not adversely affect the safety and reliability of our Proximity Warning Systems in protecting workers from harm when close to plant and equipment.
